Female Pattern Baldness - What To Look For In Hair Loss Prevention

So you are a woman and you are losing your hair. Did you know that you might have a common condition in women called female pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia? This is the same condition found in men, caused by the same hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone), but only the results are different.

Stopping Female Pattern Baldness

In order to find an effective means of stopping your hair loss from female pattern baldness, you need to understand what causes this type of hair loss. As already mentioned, DHT is the hormone whose function is to promote hair loss in men and women. In men, DHT not only promotes hair loss, but is also responsible for enlarging a man's prostate.

DHT comes from the biochemical reaction between testosterone and enzyme 5 alpha-reductase. As a woman, you may not think you have the male hormone testosterone, but you do. You have small amounts of testosterone that are usually kept in check by the female hormone estrogen. But when your levels of estrogen fall, such as when you go through menopause, testosterone is no longer controlled, and is allowed to react with the 5 alpha-reductase enzyme, creating DHT.

So to stop female pattern baldness you need to control the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase, testosterone or DHT. Most of the products on the market today, focus on preventing the formation of DHT. These products are called DHT Blockers.

The main target of these DHT Blockers is to inhibit the 5 alpha-reductase enzyme. These drugs decrease the activity of this enzyme preventing it from converting testosterone to DHT.

DHT Blockers

Some effective DHT Blockers are:
Saw Palmetto- This has been used for centuries by native Indians to solve urinary problems. After some study in Europe, it was found that this natural herbal supplement was also effective at blocking DHT, preventing hair loss.
Pygeum- Another herbal supplement effective at blocking and reducing the amount of DHT in the blood is Pygeum. Pygeum also reduces the sensitivity of sites that are receptive to attaching DHT, such as hair follicles.
Propecia- This drug is the most popular used by men to inhibit the 5 alpha-reductase enzyme. But women of childbearing age should not use Propecia or even handle it, because it can cause birth defects. If you are interested in using Propecia, discuss it with your doctor who may prescribe it for you.

Conclusion

Female pattern baldness is caused by DHT. To effectively stop hair loss caused by female pattern baldness, you need to take a DHT Blocker such as Saw Palmetto, Pygeum or Propecia.
