Introduction
Since the dawn of history, women have been looking for ways to restore their hair and prevent hair loss. But it wasn't until the late 20th century, that one drug was found that could help prevent hair loss in women. This drug approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) is Minoxidil.
It was originally used by people who had high blood pressure, when it was noticed that people who utilized this drug grew hair in different places on the body. After several years of testing, the FDA approved it for both men and women to use as a method to stop hair loss and re-grow hair caused by male and female pattern baldness.
Men were approved to use Minoxidil at 5% strength, while women were approved to use it at 2% strength. I use Minoxidil at 2% strength since the 5% solution causes me to break out.
There are two other drugs that are used successfully by dermatologists to help fight hair loss and re-grow hair, but have not been proved by the FDA.
Here are two drugs used by dermatologists to help fight hair loss in females.
Terms
An important term to understand in any hair loss in women is androgen. Androgen is a male hormone commonly referred to as testosterone. But it is also available in women, it is usually not a problem unless they become unbalanced, such as when a woman undergoes menopause. An excess amount of androgen in females may cause excess hair on the face or a thinning of hair on the scalp.
The other term important is the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase. This enzyme combines with the androgen, testosterone, to produce DHT. DHT is what causes male and female pattern baldness.
The key to controlling hair loss in women is to control the androgen or the 5 alpha-reductase enzyme to prevent DHT. The products I list here act on the androgen or 5 alpha-reductase to stop hair loss and re-growing hair.
Tagamet
Tagamet has been prescribed for controlling indigestion, heartburn, and ulcers. It has also been studied as a way to control male and female pattern baldness. This type of condition is caused by DHT attaching to the end of the follicle. When this happens the nutrients are prevented from getting to the follicles and hair strand and the hair strand falls out and the follicle dies.
Tagamet is believed to prevent DHT from attaching to the follicle.
Azelex
This substance is found in some animal products, can be produced by the human body and found in whole-grain cereals. It is believed to inhibit the five alpha-reductase enzyme. By doing this, it prevents the formation of DHT.
Rather than being taken orally like Tagamet, it is applied directly to the scalp much like Minoxidil.
Jimmy Chase started losing his hair when he turned 50. He has done lots of studies on loss of hair, in both men and women, to determine what works and what doesn't. He has successfully stopped his hair loss and has even re-grown some of his hair. He wants to help other people learn what he has learned, on dealing with loss of hair and re-growing hair.
He operates the web site http://www.no-longer-balding.com/.
